What is the Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office?
Short answer: It is an official title held by the cat that lives at 10 Downing Street in London, whose traditional job is to keep mice away. The title has been in use since the 1920s.
Quick facts
- The post. The Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office is a cat based at 10 Downing Street. The post is traditionally held by a cat, and the title has been used since the 1920s.
- Rodent control. The role reflects a much older practice. Cats have been kept in public buildings, warehouses and homes for centuries to deal with mice.
- Ships' cats. Cats travelled on ships for a very long time to protect stores and cargo from rats. The Royal Navy ended the practice in the 1970s because of quarantine and hygiene rules.
- Well fed. Official cats are, as far as the University can determine, employed on generous terms, with a salary in food and a great deal of napping.
Student report
I came to the United Kingdom on a study exchange and was assigned a corridor. I was told by an official that a corridor is, in fact, a valuable posting, and that the cat in residence at Downing Street has one.
The Chief Mouser's duties are described as keeping mice at bay. I attempted to interview the current post-holder about this, but was told that the post-holder was busy, and, in any case, asleep.
I would like to thank the staff of several ships for allowing me to visit. I was assigned a bunk, though I preferred the coil of rope.
